In this video we'll show you how to keep your BRAVIA updated with the latest firmware so you get all the benefits of your smart TV. One of the major announcements from CES was the arrival of Android TV on Sony televisions. Instead of tippy toeing around the new OS, Sony has decided to embrace Android TV in a big way and is including on its entire. With a UI that’s finally not horrid and a host of options like, the smart TV we’ve always wanted may finally be here. This of course brought to question the status of the 2014 Sony 4K televisions. Could the older Bravia 4K TVs be upgraded to Android TV? We’ve been asked this question many times on Twitter, Facebook, and our comments section so lets address it after the jump. The answer unfortunately is a big no. While it might seem like a simple firmware update, Android TV is deeply rooted in the hardware of the televisions as well and not just on an OS level. From a specific (and undisclosed) processor dedicated to Android TV to improved wireless chips to handle the required Wi-Fi speeds needed to stream content from mobile devices, the 2015 Sony 4K televisions hardware are a completely different beast than their predecessor. On top of that, all 4K televisions ship with 16GB of internal storage to store apps and games from Android TV where the 2014 Sony 4K TVs offered no internal storage space. All of this will result in a completely different UI look between those who purchased a 2014 Sony 4K television and those who will be waiting for the 2015 fleet. While this article has focused specifically on the 4K TVs from Sony, the same logic applies to Sony’s HDTVs which will also ship with Android TV. Discuss: Are you surprised that you cannot upgrade to Android TV or was this an expected thing? While I agree that controlling everything becomes more complicated when you connect other devices such as a streaming player (meaning more remotes), the end result is of much higher quality. I own a w800B from last year and wheb when I got it is noticed it didn’t have amazon support yet and lacked several other apps like Plex (which isttt now has). So I went the Amazon Fire TV route and am very happy with it. First off, no matter how good of the smart tv is it will lag a lot more than a streaming device and I had had a lot of issues with the apps on my sony crashing. Also, I think we all go with sony because of the quality of picture. Their X-reality processor and enhancers such as the smooth gradient enhancer makes whatever you are watching look better than it would on another set no matter how great the other tv is. When you use the apps on the sony TV itself it doesn’t use those enhancers. Or at least it’d didn’t on the 2014 models. This means that everything, netflix, amazon prime, hulu, etc looks TONS better playing through my FireTV because it’s coming in Hdmi and it’s able to use those enhancers. When When first got the FireTV my girlfriend would still just hit the Netflix button on the Sony remote and I could tell everytime what source it was coming from. ![]() Visio 2016 download. This is especially true with the streaming services because they compress everything so much. Best app for life planning. Again, I like functionality, but the reason I paid for fora sony was the picture quality. I can deal with having one more remote to get the best picture possible. BTW, I work as Asa home theater expert at BestBuy and specialize in Sony and samsung, so these sre things lost people may not care about but I notice them after inspecting and comparing these tvs every single day. I can say that the Android operating system in my Sony Bravia 4K 2015 do not lag at all. The usage of the apps and the fluidity of the system overall is good, and the only laggin I’ve noticed is while tuning on over the air channels. My Apple TV looks gorgeous on it, but I have to point out that the quality of the image when I use the built in apps is better. The colors are more vivid and the sharpness is greater. And that is because the TV automatically up scales and enhances the image from the Apple TV. I am extremely happy with it, and I if it had air play along with chromecast, then I’d say I would have to use my Apple TV at all.
